On Wednesday, September 14th, 2022, the Tudu Center for Leadership and Development (TCLD) held a strategic dialogue on the state of secondary education in Northern Ghana. The event took place at the conference hall of RAINS in Tamale. The dialogue brought together key players in the educational sector of the Northern Region, including a representative from the European Union Delegation in Ghana, former Regional and District Directors, Headmaster of Senior High Schools, Representatives from Civil Society Organisations in Education, opinion leaders and chiefs in and around Tamale.

In his opening remarks to the participants, Mr. Osman Mubarik Abu the Co-Founder for the TCLD appealed to all stakeholders in the education sector to consider dialoque as the platform to seek redress from the both government and other policy makers. He challenged other players in the educational sector to increase their spending and focus in secondary education in the Northern Region of Ghana.

Mr. Alhassan Alidu, the Acting Northern Regional Director of Education, made a comprehensive presentation on the current state of secondary education in Northern Ghana. He highlighted various challenges and areas needing improvement especially in the areas of learning materials, monitoring and supervision, indiscipline, drug use, luck of parental neglect. The statistics of presented during the dialogue was worrying therefore the need for further engagement with all stakeholders to get involve to improve the situation.

Ms. Mariama Mahama, the Principal of Dabokpa Technical Institute, also contributed to the discussion with a presentation on the relevance of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in the transformation of the socio-economic development of Northern Ghana.

The dialogue provided a platform for participants to discuss and understand the current issues facing secondary education in the region and explore potential solutions.
